 How did Tempe get its quirky name? In the late 1800s, Darrell Duppa, an educated and traveled Englishman, named our town after the mythological Vale of Tempe in ancient Greece, home of the lesser gods. Up until then, Tempe was known as Hayden's Ferry. To learn more about Arizona and Tempe:

- Arizona Historical Society Museum - Central Arizona's contemporary history housed in a beautiful building in Tempe's Papago Park.
- The Hall of Flame - This museum of firefighting houses more than 90 pieces of firefighting equipment dating from 1790 and the National Firefighting Hall of Heroes.
